WHO ARE YOU?

Everyone has questioned or wondered who they are, why do they look a certain way, or why they act a certain way. A unit on genetics can answer some of these questions. Genetics can be explained using simple language and can be demonstrated through fun activities. This unit was designed for fifth graders. This unit will be taught to students in a town with a population of 10,000 which consists of 49% Caucasian, 44% African American, 3% Hispanic, and 1% other.

TEACHER WARNING – teachers should realize that genetics can be a sensitive issue for some of their students.

This is a 1 week unit on Heredity

This unit incorporates Bloom’s Taxonomy of Learning Domains.  Cognitively students will be recalling facts and making predictions using Punnett  squares. Affectively students will be sensitive towards others differences. The psychomotor domain will be covered by following directions and manipulating the keyboard and mouse. During this unit, students will listen actively, express respect for others contributions and different styles, build self esteem, and manage time wisely. All of these things can be considered to be life skills.
